While many institutions talk about AI, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences is building it, testing it, and deploying it at scale. Through strategic partnerships spanning eight European countries and direct collaboration with Finnish businesses, Haaga-Helia has become the go-to institution for organizations seeking practical AI implementation – especially SMEs navigating the complex intersection of innovation and regulation.

Real-World AI Impact: From Ethics to Implementation

Haaga-Helia’s AI portfolio spans the full spectrum of business needs. Projects range from developing custom AI systems and deploying generative AI solutions to building proprietary tools and tackling the thorniest ethical questions in the field. But unlike purely theoretical research, every initiative is designed with one goal: creating solutions businesses can actually use.

Take the AIRegu project as a prime example. Recognizing that regulatory complexity was stifling HealthTech innovation, Haaga-Helia assembled an international expert community specifically focused on AI and health technology regulation. The project doesn’t just provide information – it actively solves problems.

Through collaborative workshops and pilot programmes, AIRegu helps SMEs navigate the maze of EU AI Act requirements, medical device regulations, and data protection rules. Companies that once spent months interpreting conflicting regulatory guidance now access expert consensus in days. The model works because it combines service design methodology with genuine regulatory expertise, creating frameworks that are both legally sound and practically achievable.

This focus on SME challenges reflects Haaga-Helia’s broader philosophy: AI expertise means nothing if businesses can’t access and apply it.

Two Networks, One Mission: Democratising AI Access

Haaga-Helia’s influence extends through two major European networks, each serving distinct but complementary purposes.

Through the Finnish AI Region (FAIR) consortium, part of the EU’s European Digital Innovation Hub network, the university provides Finnish companies with direct access to advanced technologies including AI, extended reality, high-performance computing, and cybersecurity. The initiative deliberately maintains a “low barrier to entry” – companies need not possess deep technical expertise to benefit from cutting-edge resources.

“FAIR essentially translates complex AI capabilities into solutions businesses can actually implement,” explains a consortium spokesperson Martti Asikainen. The initiative aims to level the playing field for Finnish SMEs competing across Europe.

Haaga-Helia’s international reach extends even further through the Ulysseus European University alliance, which unites eight universities and approximately 220,000 students across the continent. The university leads Ulysseus’s Applied Artificial Intelligence for Business and Education innovation hub, a role that places it at the intersection of academic research and commercial application.

Unlike traditional academic AI research focused primarily on publication, the hub prioritises practical outcomes. Students tackle genuine business challenges as part of their education, whilst companies gain access to the latest research findings translated into implementable strategies.

Access the Expertise You Need

Whether you’re an SME struggling with AI regulation, a larger organization planning your AI strategy, or an educational institution preparing students for an AI-driven economy, Haaga-Helia’s networks and expertise can accelerate your progress.

The university’s RDI (Research, Development, and Innovation) activities, particularly in AI, represent some of Europe’s most practical and accessible resources for turning AI potential into business reality.
